Bookcases that attach to the wall were first commonly found in interiors during the first half of the 20th century. Jean Prouvé designed a number of different wall-mounted shelving units - such as the Rayonnage Mural (Shelf for Wall in English) produced by Vitra, which was originally conceived in 1936 for the École Nationale Professionelle in the French city of Metz.

The two vertical wall brackets of Rayonnage Mural are made of powder-coated bent sheet metal. With their streamlined shape, reminiscent of the rudder of an aircraft or ship, they are a recurring element in Prouvé's designs. The wall brackets have precise horizontal slits into which the solid wood shelves are inserted. Together the two contrasting materials form a design that is both a practical shelf and a sculptural, aesthetically pleasing object. The Rayonnage Mural works well as a standalone piece, or repeated on the wall vertically and/or horizontally to form a larger display.

The wooden shelves come in a choice of light or dark oak while the wall brackets are available in various original Prouvé colours.

Jean Prouvé

This product is designed by
Jean Prouvé

Jean Prouvé completed his training as a metal artisan before opening his own workshop in Nancy in 1924. In the following years he created numerous furniture designs, and in 1947 Prouvé established his own factory.

He left his mark on architectural history again in 1971, when he played a major role in selecting the design of Renzo Piano and Richard Rogers for the Centre Pompidou as chairman of the competition jury. Prouvé's work encompasses a wide range of objects, from a letter opener to door and window fittings, lighting and furniture, façade elements and prefabricated houses / modular building systems to large exhibition structures – essentially, almost anything that is suited to industrial production methods.
