Form & Refine's Shoemaker is a true classic design. The chair has been made in Denmark since 1936 by the Werner family - where it still to this day is produced by local joiners. It comes in three height variants No.49 (49 cm seat height), No.68 (68 cm seat height) and No. 78 (78 cm seat height). The No. 68 chair is the perfect height for using at most kitchen breakfast bars/counters with a height of 90-95 cm.

The seat is shaped out of one large solid piece of wood and because of the variations in the woodgrain, every Shoemaker Chair™ is completely unique. Together, the turned legs and the stabilising T connection create a harmonic and aesthetic piece of furniture with strong references to the Nordic design universe. The construction may look rather simple, but it is technically difficult to master.

The solid piece of wood has to be carved very accurately to ensure a perfect place to park your derrière. At the end of the process every model is finished by hand before going into a three-step process of staining or oiling surface treatments.

Lars Werner (2nd generation of the Werner Family) on the design: We have tirelessly optimised the chair since the early stages, adjusting minor aspects year after year – both in the production flow and in the finished product. Among other things, the T legs were added for extra stability and the seat was re-shaped and rounded so that if the chair falls the rounded profile would protect the top-line from breaking.

Materials/Construction

Smoked oak is a special treatment where the oak is contained in a sealed environment with ammonia fumes. The ammonia creates a chemical reaction with the natural tannins in the wood and permanently darkens the wood.
